Recap: The Road to Resilience: Flood Risk Insights from Climate Central’s Edge of America Tour

In our recent webinar, Climate Central’s Dan Rizza and Alison Kopicki shared insights into their flood resilience work at Climate Central, specifically highlighting stories from their recent Edge of America Tour.  

As a part of Climate Central’s goals to raise awareness about sea level rise and coastal resilience, the Edge of America Tour took the team on a coastal route from Maine to Texas, where they met with local leaders, discussed resilience strategies, and showcased FloodVision – a tool that visualizes future flooding and elevation measurements.

In the webinar, Dan and Allison discussed the development of the FloodVision project and its goals: to provide high-quality elevation data for flood risk assessments and create flood visualizations to enhance risk communication. They showcased powerful visuals produced by FloodVision, highlighting the impact of flooding in cities like Alexandria, VA, and Washington, D.C., as well as specific communities they visited during the Edge of America Tour in Connecticut, New Jersey, and Florida. 

Dan and Allison shared key takeaways from the tour, including how accessible visualizations can be used to educate residents and local leaders. Throughout the tour, they found a shared interest among local leaders in effectively communicating flood risk and planning for long-term resilience.
