# Overview
> Visualize and analyze your geospatial data with interactive maps
Maps in Forerunner serve as a dynamic visual layer that helps you understand your community's data geographically. They enable you to analyze trends, make informed decisions, and gain a comprehensive understanding of your area through customizable map layers and interactive features.

## Where you can use maps
Maps are available throughout Forerunner to provide geographic context for your work:
**On the web** - Access the full desktop mapping experience in your browser with:
* Multiple map layers you can toggle on and off
* Interactive features you can click for detailed information
* Search functionality to find specific locations
* Measurement tools for distance and area calculations
* Zoom and pan controls for navigation
**In the field** - Use the mobile app with offline map support to:
* View maps without an internet connection
* Access the same layers and data as the web interface
* Collect data directly on the map
* Navigate to specific properties or objects
Work with your Customer Success Manager to configure which map layers are available for offline use on mobile devices.
## Types of map data
Forerunner supports multiple types of geographic information:
**Properties and parcels** - View your properties as point markers and parcel boundaries as polygons to understand property locations and boundaries.
**Flood data** - Display FIRM flood zones, Base Flood Elevations, cross-sections, and other flood-related information to support floodplain management workflows.
**Custom map layers** - Import your own geospatial data such as:
* Infrastructure systems (stormwater, utilities)
* Community boundaries
* Environmental features
* Land use designations
* Critical facilities
**Aerial imagery** - Add custom aerial photography and orthoimagery to provide visual context for your area.
**Property warnings** - Display visual indicators for properties that require attention, such as:
* Properties in the Special Flood Hazard Area
* Properties with pending inspections
* Properties with outstanding violations
* Custom warning conditions
## Key features
Maps in Forerunner are interactive and customizable:
### Navigate the map
* **Zoom** in and out using mouse scroll, buttons, or touch gestures
* **Pan** by clicking and dragging the map
* **Search** for specific addresses, properties, or locations
* **Geolocate** to center the map on your current location
### Control what you see
* **Layers panel** - Toggle visibility of different data layers
* **Basemap selection** - Choose from different background map styles
* **Filter data** - Show only the information relevant to your current task
* **Custom styling** - Maps can be configured with custom colors, icons, and labels
### Interact with map features
* **Click** on properties, custom objects, or other features to view details
* **Hover** over features to see quick information
* **View related data** - Access records, files, and tasks associated with map features
* **Navigate to details** - Jump to full property or object pages from the map
### Share and collaborate
* **Save map views** - Create saved views with specific filters and share them with your team
* **Public sharing** - Share filtered map views with residents on your public website
* **Export data** - Export visible map data for reporting and analysis
The map remembers your last zoom level and location during your session, so you don't have to reposition the map each time you return to it.
## Common workflows
Maps support key resilience and community management workflows:
* **Flood risk mapping** - Visualize flood zones, elevation data, and properties at risk to prioritize mitigation efforts
* **Inspection planning** - View properties requiring inspection and plan efficient field routes
* **Emergency response** - Track incidents, coordinate response activities, and monitor affected areas during events
* **Infrastructure management** - Map and monitor stormwater systems, critical facilities, and other community assets
* **Community analysis** - Understand geographic patterns, identify trends, and communicate findings to stakeholders
* **Public transparency** - Share flood zone information, permit status, and other public data with residents
## Map interface overview
When you open the map interface, you'll see:
**Main map area** - The interactive map displaying your selected layers and data
**Layers panel** (accessed via layers icon) - Control which layers are visible on the map
**Search bar** - Find specific addresses, properties, or locations
**Zoom controls** - Plus and minus buttons to zoom in and out
**Geolocate button** - Center the map on your current location
**Measure tool** - Calculate distances and areas on the map
**Detail panels** - When you click a feature, a panel opens showing detailed information, related records, files, and tasks
The map interface may vary slightly depending on your account configuration and the features your organization has enabled. Contact your Customer Success Manager to customize your map settings.
## Getting started with maps
New to maps in Forerunner? Here's how to begin:
1. **Navigate to the map** - Click the map icon in the main navigation or select "View on map" from any table view
2. **Explore the layers** - Click the layers icon to open the layers panel and see what data is available
3. **Toggle layers on and off** - Check and uncheck boxes to control which information appears on the map
4. **Click on features** - Click any property, custom object, or map feature to view detailed information
5. **Search for locations** - Use the search bar to find specific addresses or properties
6. **Zoom and pan** - Navigate around your community to explore different areas
As you become more comfortable with the map interface, explore advanced features like filtering data, creating saved views, and using the measurement tools.
