# Quick start

> Get up and running with the Forerunner API in minutes

<Steps>
  <Step title="Get your API key">
    Contact your Customer Success Manager or reach out to [engineering@withforerunner.com](mailto:engineering@withforerunner.com) to obtain your API key.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Make your first request">
    Try listing files with a simple GET request:

    ```bash theme={null}
    curl https://app.withforerunner.com/api/v1/files \
      -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY"
    ```

    <Warning>
      Sending from Postman gets you a `403` even with a valid API key, because our firewall blocks its default `User-Agent`. See [Errors](/docs/developers/v1/errors) for the fix.
    </Warning>
  </Step>

  <Step title="Explore the endpoints">
    Every operation is listed under [Endpoints](/docs/developers/v1/reference/files/list-files) in the sidebar, with its parameters, response shape, and a request you can send from the page.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Authentication

All API requests require authentication using your API key in the Authorization header. See the [Authentication](/docs/developers/v1/authentication) page for complete details.

## Response format

All API responses are returned in JSON format. List endpoints return 25 results per page and include pagination metadata.
