# Overview

> Build powerful integrations with the Forerunner API

The Forerunner API enables you to programmatically manage floodplain data, records, files, and more. Whether you're building integrations with existing systems, automating data workflows, or creating custom applications, our API provides comprehensive access to Forerunner's core functionality.

## API capabilities

The Forerunner API allows you to:

* **Manage files** - Upload, retrieve, and update Elevation Certificates, permits, and other floodplain documents
* **Track SI/SD** - Submit and manage Substantial Damage and Substantial Improvement records
* **Create logs** - Record public assistance interactions including phone calls, walk-ins, web forms, and written requests
* **Query properties** - Search and retrieve property information including parcel data
* **Access records** - List and filter various record types with full property context
* **Receive webhooks** - Get notified when an Elevation Certificate you uploaded finishes processing

## Base URLs

Forerunner provides two environments for development and production use:

<CodeGroup>
  ```plaintext Production theme={null}
  https://app.withforerunner.com
  ```

  ```plaintext Staging theme={null}
  https://app.staging.withforerunner.com
  ```
</CodeGroup>

<Note>
  Develop against staging. It is a separate account with separate API keys and separate data, so nothing you send there reaches production.
</Note>

## Use the API in your client

The API publishes an OpenAPI 3.1 document:

```plaintext theme={null}
https://app.withforerunner.com/api/v1/openapi.json
```

Import the URL rather than a downloaded copy so your client stays current:

* **Postman** - Import, then Link, then paste the URL
* **Insomnia** - Import From, then URL
* **Code generation** - point `openapi-generator` or `openapi-typescript` at the same URL

The document lists the production and staging servers, so an imported collection is ready to send once you add your API key.
